Commissioning

Commissions

Let’s knock one myth on the head right away; commissioning a piece of furniture isn’t difficult or scary. It also isn’t only for the very wealthy. It is actually good fun, and all about you. This is our simple guide to the process.

  1. Realise that you really need (or would really like) a certain piece of furniture in a particular spot in your house or one to do a particular job.
  2. Realise that the reason you don't already have it is because you've never seen quite the right thing anywhere.
  3. Get in touch with a furniture designer/maker. We'd like it to be us, but there are plenty of makers out there.
  4. If you choose us, Matthew will arrange a convenient time to come and meet you, see your home and talk through what it is you want.
  5. Matthew will spend time working with your ideas through his creative design process to develop two or three different design options for you.
  6. Meet Matthew again and he'll introduce his designs and take you through the costs. He'll listen to your thoughts and discuss the final design. If you agree this is the piece you want, only then do you pay your deposit. At this point we'll get your piece onto the workshop schedule.
  7. When we're ready to start making your piece, we'll ask you for the second payment instalment. We would love you to come and visit us while your piece is being made. Even if you don't live close by, Devon is a beautiful county for a weekend away.
  8. Matthew will deliver your new, bespoke, piece of furniture. You pay the balance of the payment on delivery.
  9. Show off your new piece of furniture to your friends, family and neighbours, and impress them with your knowledge of the finer details of bespoke furniture making in the process.
